2012: continuity or crisis? by Tim Rogers,
published in The Nicaragua Dispatch on January 2, 2012
and accessed on March 19, 2012.
Summary:
For the first time in Nicaragua's history Daniel Ortega is being unconstitutionality reelected. In one way this is a good thing because Ortega has already laid the ground work and has a solid relationship with the government and people of Nicaragua and thus can focus more on solving issues plus it adds continuity which the people heavily desire. However there are concerns on the legitimacy of Ortega's reelection as the electoral process at his time around was less then credible and critics worry how Ortega will be able to handle new issues arising with domestic and foreign policy due to his recent communication with undesirable foreign contacts.
In addition, the government still has to tackle many challenges ahead such as a need for a built political consensus for economic reform, a need to deepen social programs while improving the poverty-relief programs, a need to respect and protect freedom of expression with a reduced polarization, a need to maintain a majority support from Nicaraguans, a need to provide a safer and improved citizen security, and finally avoid crazy foreign policy by intertwining the nation with other less than advantageous countries such as Iran.

My Thoughts:
There is a small debate running on whether Ortega should be the first reelected and the next president of Nicaragua however I honestly would have to lend my opinion in favor of Ortega. The people want continuity and not only do they want it but they deserve it, nearly every presidency (every 5 years) the slate is wiped clean and every policy and everything that was defining the government and the people immediately change ad evolve over five years before repeating the process. By this process there is no security and it makes it near impossible to tackle the tough jobs that have to be done. Even if the legitimacy is not 100% there the people like Ortega's administration and because he has 5 years experience he can hit the ground running and really work on the growth and development of Nicaragua making a stronger and more satisfied nation.

How it relates to Politics:
Ortega's reelection will define the political aspect of all of Nicaragua. The election of any head of state and their administration is very important as it sets the ground for the type of government and it's actions which directly affect all policies and people plus represent all Nicaraguans. Ortega's reign will show what the nation is all about and the decisions made will affect future politics throughout the nation on every level.
