The Old Cathedral of Managua by Nica Writer, published
in The Nicaragua Report on August 22, 2011 and accessed
on November 29, 2011.
Summary:
This article follows the story of Catedral Vieja a cathedral in
a culturally rich area. The cathedral however suffered significant damage in an earthquake in the 70s and has not recovered. The author talks about the building’s history and then the possibility to rebuild before saying the idea could be impossible to carry out, “It would be wonderful if Nicaragua could possibly restore the Cathedral, but that would be an engineering feat in itself”. The article ends on a note to tourists who are in the area to come look at the old relic while on a tour.

My Thoughts:
This is sad. I see this article as almost the loss of culture. This is only one of many examples one will see all over the world… many buildings and pieces of culture in both architecture and tradition are being destroyed and forgotten. The funds or the time/energy to preserve them has dissipated and with it the forgotten culture. The author does have hope in its restoration but there is no cause. They mention that one should visit but do not present the need of interest needed for this building to withstand the test o time. People all over the world have some hope but no action to preserve certain things of the past because they do not care and as such are left to forget previous culture.

How it relates to Culture:
This article is about an old cathedral built in the 1920s that is currently barely put together due a quake. This building is an important part of culture because it connects to religious practices and exhibits architecture of that time. Something that can be remembered and stand of a reminder of how far Nicaragua has come and where it did come from. People are of other people and when the first forget the others that made the world what it is, they forget times of unrest or peace. We learn from the past and buildings are a reminder of things accorded without them we so easily forget.
